After
sixteen hours or so of flight, including five different take-offs, we arrived
in Salisbury at
about eleven p.m..
Johannesburg had been
ghastly – an unplanned monster of a city, where all the good old has given
place to brash new. We spent six hours
of exhaustion trying to get through to Salisbury
via broken or non-existent public telephones and useless operators, and trying
to arrange a flight. We were very
tired. But there was less [of] obvious
apartheid than I had expected.
