Politics}[13th April 1970]

One of the
basic questions for British socialism is this: Does one believe that one will
earn more real wealth for the bulk of the people of the country by emphasising
redistribution of incomes or by concentrating on providing incentives for
everyone? Since it is not easy to
measure either possibility, the question becomes rooted -- like so many others
in British politics -- in emotion and (dare I say it?) the psychological make-up of the individual
who holds the view.
In fact,
nearly all our arguments are chosen because of our emotional base, and
rationalised thereafter. And absolutely
all of our approaches to a question are emotionally orientated i.e. they
reflect our personal psychology -- even in "lack of emotion".
