‘Degas, with a self-sufficient fund of artistic reserves to call on, found his repose in the concentrated series of female nudes* that dominated his art from 1884[ce]** onwards. (For Gauguin, those nudes restored design when it was at its lowest ebb).

For his part, Renoir deliberately changed his style, using elements of ancient, Pompeian, Renaissance, and classical art*** to sustain his pictorial thinking.

Instead of looking back to the achievements of older art, Pissarro**** threw in his lot with a new movement which was to be called Neo-Impressionism, the first radical alternative to Impressionism.’
