‘The revival of Classical learning in Italy, which was so marked a feature of Italian culture during the 15^th century, was paralleled by an equal passion for the beauty of Classical design in all the artistic fields; and when this eager delight in the then fresh and sensuous graciousness that is the mark of much Classical work – to the Italians of that time, seemingly the expression of a golden age – became universal, complete domination of* the Classical ideal in art was inevitable.’
