Not the Bi-centennial, but Watergate marks the coming-of-age of
America: more particularly, the discovery of Watergate, and those
dozens of contemporary symptoms – militant pacifism, the Senate
hearings, the foreign policy of Congress – which have become the
pinpricks of traditional American pride. For a strange
self-awareness, almost humble, is the hallmark of the new American:
that, and a restrained self-assurance which needs no boasting.
