‘[In the Princess’ Salon of the Hôtel de Soubise] Eight canvases by Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-77[ce]) depict the story of *Psyche, based on works by Apuleius and LaFontaine…. ‘If they are meant to be the focal point, they are somewhat overwhelmed by the tumbling gilt stucco which frames the paintings, cascades down the walls, and twists and curls across the ceiling to form the central rosette.’
