‘When Michelangelo returned to painting in 1534, he had already passed through the experience of Mannerism in Florence and through the harrowing years that included the sack of Rome and the siege of Florence. Some of the horror of these years emerges in “The Last Judgment” that he painted in fresco on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel.’
