‘[Dog]’

‘Oh [Hunter], do you think he’s run away?’
You never could look after him today
                                    The way you could tomorrow
                                    Could you borrow
The time.  We have to pay.

The dog has gnawed a wormhole in your heart
But left your head untouched, if touched, apart.
When the first your father said
                                    “I'll shoot him dead”
You felt it with your heart.

The head thinks -- yes, I'll do what Daddy says.
The heart takes hold the head, which disobeys.
And so you stayed, and sighed.
                                    The dog died.
--------

He might have lived, and loved, and laughed, his days.
