The proper alternative* is not to have money – but if you are not to have mounting debts, that means not having the wife. Separate accounts, unmarried cohabitants, and possibly illegitimate children if you dare risk children at all.

Why do I generalise? – Because [W] was a working** girl for sixteen years, who for all but the first few of those years lived away from home supporting herself in a way I never fully had, with only moderate credit-card debts when we married*** and quite capable of carrying on for another thirty years or so in the same way. And yet she started to go to pieces when we married – she was fine when we cohabited – and has got worse since the children arrived.

I am sure that this is the effect I have on her. It is simply a loss of rational judgement, especially (but not only) in matters financial, coupled with an apparent inability to see it.**** I guess it arises naturally out of the marriage relationship, in which case there is no escaping it within marriage.

God help me: I can only play my role to the full, not half-and-half as I have tried to do. This may take a while to arrange; but I don’t see the alternative.#

What with this,* and finding we can eat for £30 - £40 per week** instead of the £100+ p[er] w[eek] [W] had been spending, (making paying-off debts impossible), my attitude to wives and families has taken a bit of a knock: don’t treat your wife as an equal partner in financial matters (domestic or commercial), because however smart and reliable she is on her own (and mine was pretty good), once she’s got small children her judgement will go up the pipe. It’s your job, not hers, to finance the nest, unfortunately; her instincts are simply to feather it. That doesn’t mean she shouldn’t work: just that she shouldn’t control the budget.

The significance of all this is that when we came here less than three years ago we had £[...] in capital as well as our house; now we just have the house, and no significant increase in capital items (about £1,000 worth, I guess): and we are still in almost as much of a shambles as when we arrived. Undoubtedly, this is due to my previous unwillingness to manage [W] and the family, wishing as I did to keep the focus of my mind on C[ircles] A[nalysis] & S[ynthesis], etc.; but it has cost us dear in security, for we have virtually no reserve now against large repairs etc., which was the situation I had always determined to avoid. Deciding not to worry about money**** didn’t help: we simply got through the little that was left in even larger lumps.

The only solution would have been to control it, and [W], whose money also it was, which would have meant revising my judgement of her judgement, and dominating her, that much sooner. Outer Circle with a vengeance.

I’ve just had the delightful news that our Planning Permission application has been refused. In fact, it was greedy: trying to up the value for sale (or make sale quicker), so deserved to fail. It is an unpleasant characteristic of mine to blame everyone else (vanity and fear, again); but in this case I did have misgivings about the morality of it. It seemed wrong to impose my inhibitions on [W], whose property also it* is, and whose enthusiastic idea it was in the first place, strongly supported by her employer, a Llan[...] solicitor, who wrote to us agreeing to act for us in planning matters, and who seemed to think it could hardly fail (Welsh Office policy), and by a local surveyor friend of his who did the plans. Not until the fees had been safely paid did anyone mention the possibility of problems with access and highways, which is what, nearly £1,000 later, we are going to be refused on.**

The morals of the story are[:]

(1) Don’t be greedy[;]

(2) Don’t leave such matters to your wife (which is what I expressly did, wanting to be free to concentrate on my own study)[;]

(3) Don’t trust the professionals – I have been let down far more often by professionals than by (for example) craftsmen.***

II.* Within a super cycle, the relationship of sequential equal(-period) cycles is dependent upon, or at least related to, the (relationship between) the degrees of the super cycle(s). (I imagine that the general influence of cycles on super cycles gets weaker, and on sub cycles stronger(?), the further they are from C on the larger cycle of the relationship).**

Influence must be reduced both by the passage of time (at least between the end of the influencing cycle and the start of the influenced cycle); and also must depend [sic] upon the relative size (period-term) of each cycle.

So, for example, it is well known that childhood experiences affect later life, but it is (I believe) believed that the earlier the experience, the more profound and lasting the effect. C[ircles] A[nalysis] & S[ynthesis] suggests a slightly different pattern eg (using my own as an example):***
